COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will focus on dance as theatre. The students will be expected to create pieces of work as well as evaluate the work of their peers and other professional Choreographers. Choreographic workshops will be conducted and in-house presentations of students work will be assessed. Presentations will be evaluated not only on stage patterns, but costume, lighting and general theatrical effects.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

• Students will be able to
• Describe and discuss the work of major Caribbean choreographers in key creative areas such as structure, themes, phisicality and their use of time and space.
• Apply principles from discussions to their own choreographies.
• Evaluate dances by master Choreographers to aid in developing a critical eye
• Demonstrate an understanding of the various Choreography moments

COURSE CONTENT:

• Multi-media in dance composition
• Holistic look at the process of construction, putting the elements together
• Design and meaning
• Student organization/presentation of seminars, workshops
• Dance Critiquing

METHOD OF DELIVERY:

• Practical and theoretical work in lighting design
• Lectures on costuming, (color, appropriate style)
• Enforcing the use of compositional structures (ABA,ABACADA, RONDO, etc)
• Observing through live and film presentations choreographic works by professional choreographers

ASSESSMENT:

Quiz
Written review assignment
Research paper on one selected choreographer
Presentation of a dance at least five minutes long
