Course Description:

This course prepares the actor for the production of a play that will take place at the end of the semester. After a previous semester during which the actor explores a series of movement, vocal and creative exercises, the actors develop a sense of team work and individual craft that gets them ready for the actual production. During the production, they will design, stage and act in a play that allows for a large number of students to act, design, produce, etc.

Objectives:

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
• Recreate the world of the play.
• Undergo the process of character preparation through movement choices.
• Develop awareness of the embodied connections taking place during actual character development.
• Apply the realizations undergone during class to their character work as they combine movement, text and music.
• Play an active role in the organization, management, designing, funding, marketing advertising and staging of the play.


Course Content:

Week 1

• January / Monday 21: Discussion of production and administrative issues.
• Wed. 23: Discussion of the Course Outline. Warm up. Stretching. Exploration of directions, levels, planes and space. Introduction to Afro-Cuban Dances. Discussion of The
Repeating Island by Antonio Benitez Rojo.
• Thursday: Choral Yyalochas / Madrina Rehearsal (Work on Yoruba texts)
• Friday 25: Discussion of the play Maria Antonia. Warm Up. Floor Plan. Start Blocking [Act

I] blocks 1 (Scenes 1-6) and 2 (Scenes 7 – 12)

• Saturday 26: Choral Yyalochas / Madrina Rehearsal (Work on Yoruba Texts)
