COURSE PRESCRIPTION:The concept of the Festival Dance Ensemble is to develop a professional Dance company that will operate as the resident dance company for the Department of Creative and Festival Arts. Students will be expected to continue the development of their technical and performance skills to an advanced level. They will be engaged in the assessment of their personal range of technique and performance through the choreographic works created in class. The work will focus on building a comprehensive dance repertoire.

Ensemble members will be expected to contribute to one or more aspects of the following activities: performance, choreography, tour management, production support and publicity.


COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:

Execute movements at an advanced level

Perform at national and international events

Demonstrate development in their sense of style and aesthetics in performance

Demonstrate a sense of commitment and belonging

COURSE CONTENT
Creating a body of dance work at an advanced level that will give students an opportunity to perform at major university events both home and abroad as well as community based events. The presentation of an annual season of dance will also advance the student’s performance level. This course will specifically focus on comparsa (street dance) steps to then stylize them. The course will expand into Cuban popular dance forms, stylize them to finally allow the input of the students’ own creativity and cultural influences to create new steps.

Method of Delivery
Warm-up exercises to continue building strength, flexibility, technique and proper alignment

Across the floor sequences that will facilitate the acquisition of musicality, technical skills and performance styles

Developing and performing a body of choreographic works by collaborative production of professional dance choreographies.

Developing and performing a body of choreographic works by specially chosen B.A. students

Assessment: Coursework 100%

Participation and attention to directions 20%

Rehearsal Discipline 10%

Reflective Journal 20%

Active contribution to the ensemble 20%

Performance evaluation in course and schedule performance 30%
