Topic: Metaphor in the Rituals of Restorative and Transformative Groups

This article was written by Joseph W. Bastien and David G. Bromley. The name of the book it was taken from is called Rituals and Ceremonies in popular Culture. This book contains a collection of essays which examines various rituals and ceremonies in American popular culture, including architecture, religion, television viewing, and humor, eating, as well as dancing. This book contains twenty seven chapters. This author also has a lot more articles. As I read this article two of the word which stood out for me was rituals and ceremonies. So a question was asked what the difference between the two can be.

A ritual is something that one does on a regular basis, while a ceremony is something that is more for occasions. We also look at three more words:

• Metaphor - the use to describe somebody or something of a word or phrase that is not meant literally but by means of a vivid comparison expresses something about him, her, or it, e.g. saying that somebody is a snake

• Restorative - something that gives somebody new strength or vigor, especially an activity or medication

• Transformative - transitive verb to change somebody or something completely, especially improving their appearance or usefulness

In reading this article we saw that there were two groups the SCA and the UC. The SCA was founded in Berkeley ,California in 1966 and currently has more than 10,000 members .They live life as it was in the middle ages, which is associated with the feudal order in that era. Members act as if they were inhabitants of the medieval age, and assume roles appropriate to that social order. The UC on the other hand was established on the west coast of the U.S. in 1959, but languished in relative obscurity until the 1970s.The UC has for the most 3000 to 4000 members. In the both organizations there are certain implications of the metaphor construct. Also when reading this article we saw that one group was governed by a leader and that leader stays for as long as they live, while the other group, the leader ship role was based on who was victorious during battle.
